How To Brush Your Teeth Properly

When it comes to brushing your teeth, there are a few simple rules that you must follow. People should brush their teeth using a soft bristled toothbrush for at least two minutes, twice a day. They should also refrain from brushing immediately after eating or drinking anything acidic, as this causes the enamel to be more vulnerable to wear over time and can lead to duller and yellowing teeth.
Many people still find it hard to follow these rules and stick to a consistent regime. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to brush your teeth properly.

  1. Place the toothbrush head against the tooth at a 45-degree angle and brush gently using small circular motions.
  2. Roll or flick the toothbrush in order to move plaque away from the gum line and towards the biting edge of the tooth.
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for every tooth, checking that all outer tooth surfaces and gum lines are cleaned.
  4. Next, focus in on the front teeth and gently brush the inner surface of each tooth found here before rolling or flicking the toothbrush towards the biting edge of these teeth.
  5. Move onto the biting teeth and gently brush the flat surface back and forth.
  6. Repeat step five but this time applied to the chewing teeth.
  7. Finally, gently but firmly brush the tongue in order to remove bacteria and spit out.

Who Suffers From Sensitive Teeth?

It’s commonly felt among people aged between 20 and 40, particularly women, though anyone can experience it.

What Causes Sensitive Teeth?

There are many reasons why our teeth can feel sensitive, though it often comes down to the wearing away of our tooth enamel. This can be caused by something as simple as brushing your teeth too hard or consuming lots of acidic food and drink such as fizzy drinks and citrus-flavoured products.

Other culprits behind sensitive teeth include receding gums, gum disease and grinding your teeth. Bear in mind that some people experience short-term sensitivity after teeth-bleaching treatments too.

How to manage sensitive teeth?

The good news is, caring for sensitive teeth can be easy. Simply brush your teeth twice a day with a toothpaste designed to help protect sensitive teeth. When you do this, make sure to:

  • Clean everywhere in your mouth, especially along the gumline.
  • Don’t brush in a side-to-side motion; use small, circular movements.
  • Choose a soft-bristled, toothbrush with a dentist-approved toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth.

Note that sharp, shooting pain can sometimes be caused by a cavity. If you experience this, visit a dentist who should be able to help.

Excessive bending may break the neck of the toothbrush. Children under 6 years should be supervised during brushing. Do not allow bristles or toothbrush to be chewed. It is recommended that toothbrushes are replaced every 3 months.
