Red eyes can indicate minor irritation or a more serious condition, such as an infection. Red or bloodshot eyes occur when small blood vessels on the surface of the eye become enlarged and congested with blood. 

The appearance of red eyes is caused by dilation of tiny blood vessels that are located between the sclera and the overlying clear conjunctiva of the eye. These tiny blood vessels (many of which normally are invisible) can become swollen because of environmental or lifestyle-related reasons or because of specific eye problems. Red eyes usually are caused by allergy, eye fatigue, over-wearing contact lenses or common eye infections such as pink eye (conjunctivitis). However, redness of the eye sometimes can signal a more serious eye condition or disease, such as uveitis or glaucoma.

Causes of Red Eyes:

• Allergies: Outdoor triggers include pollen from grasses and trees. Indoor ones include pet dander, dust, and mold
• Broken blood vessels: This happens when tiny blood vessels break beneath the surface of your eye. The blood is trapped and makes the white of your eye turn bright red

Conjunctivitis, or pink eye, is an infection that includes swelling and irritation of the conjunctiva. The conjunctiva is a thin transparent membrane that lines the inside of the eyelid and loops back to cover the white part of the eye. An infection of the conjunctiva irritates the blood vessels, causing them to swell. This inflammation makes the whites of the eyes appear reddish or pink.
