Benylin Phlegm Cough 125ml is a non-drowsy formula which works deep down to help make your cough more productive. The active ingredient guaifenesin helps to thin and loosen mucus in your chest, making it easier to cough up. The levonmenthol provides a soothing sensation.

What is a phlegm cough?

Phlegm coughs are caused by a build-up of phlegm in the lungs and on the chest. The cough mechanism kicks in to try and get rid of this excess phlegm.

When a wet phlegm cough sits on your chest it feels heavy as though an octopus is weighing down on your chest. Phlegm producing tissue lines our lungs. The function of phlegm is to protect the body from dust, bacteria, viruses and other inhaled debris. Even when you are not ill, your body produces mucus to trap external particles and keep them from entering the lungs, acting as a filter. When you get a cold, more phlegm is produced to trap the viruses or bacteria. This phlegm can gather in the respiratory system and a cough reflex is triggered to help remove it. When phlegm builds up in the chest, it can be thick and difficult to get rid of by coughing. Therefore it is useful to have something that can help loosen the mucus and ease bronchial congestion – relieving that feeling of heaviness on your chest.

Phlegm is that thick, sticky stuff that hangs around in the back of your throat when you’re sick. At least that’s when most people notice it. But did you know that you have this mucus all the time?

Mucus membranes make phlegm to protect and support your respiratory system. These membranes line your:

  • Mouth
  • Nose
  • Throat
  • Sinuses
  • Lungs

Mucus is sticky so that it can trap dust, allergens, and viruses. When you’re healthy, the mucus is thin and less noticeable. When you’re sick or exposed to too many particles, the phlegm can get thick and become more noticeable as it traps these foreign substances. Phlegm is a healthy part of your respiratory system, but if it’s making you uncomfortable, you may want to find ways to thin it or remove it from your body.
